Much like people, dogs can be allergic to different things in the environment: food, shampoo, dust, and medications. You might have noticed that your dog has symptoms of an allergic reaction such as itchiness, dry skin patches or red eyes.
As dog owners, what can we do when our best friend has an allergy?
While it’s not always easy pinpointing what’s causing the allergic reaction, we can be more careful about what we expose our dogs to. This means limiting processed foods, chemicals found in shampoos and other dog skincare products and being careful about things in their environment. This could include dust or pollens in the air, water quality and even bacteria or dust mites found in your dogs’ bedding.

I chose Vet’s Best Hypoallergenic Dog Shampoo as I know many dog owners would prefer a product that’s recommended by a veterinarian.
Vet’s Best has been created with natural and gentle ingredients- Aloe Vera which is soothing to the skin, and vitamin E which is a great moisturizer. This dog shampoo is great for dogs with allergies and other skin conditions.
It’s a soap-free formula that won’t lead to tears during washing, but it’s still effective at cleaning your dog’s coat. If you’re using topical flea and tick products, Vet’s Best is gentle enough that it won’t affect other products used on your dog.
Burts Bees has a reputation for having great quality and natural products for your dog, and so I chose their hypoallergenic shampoo as one of the best hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs on the market.
The shampoo includes natural ingredients such as beeswax, Shea butter and honey which creates a very pleasant scent and is moisturizing for your dog’s skin.
There are other chemicals included in the shampoo which are derived from coconuts, and are used as a surfactant, which is what makes a shampoo “soapy” and creates the foam. There’s differing advice on whether these chemicals are allergens or not, so be wary with your dog. However, most users of Burts Bees have left positive reviews that the shampoo works well for their dog that suffers from allergies.
The shampoo contains no parabens, sulfates, phthalates, or SLS and is pH balanced. It doesn’t contain any colors, essential oils or fragrances, and is made in the U.S.A.
Earthbath is a great natural, hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs that is safe, gentle and effective for washing dogs.
It features coconut-based cleansers, Aloe Vera and uses olive oil as a preservative. The shampoo is soap-free and doesn’t contain DEA, parabens, phosphates, synthetic dyes or colors.
It’s cruelty-free and safe enough that any run off will not harm your other pets, your lawn or your kids. Earthbath is an environmentally-friendly hypoallergenic dog shampoo, it is biodegradable.
Earthbath won’t wash off any topical flea or tick applications, but it still effective enough as a cleanser. It’s safe for puppies over 6 weeks old.
While it’s difficult to find out what’s causing your dog’s allergies, by eliminating chemicals and non-natural products that you use on your dog, you’ve got a good chance of reducing any reactions.
